PSHE (RSE)
At Thorpe Acre Infant School, we follow the Cambridge PSHE scheme and have carefully designed our curriculum based on our reflections of our school context and our pupil's life experiences. For example, as a school with many different cultures and religions, we have taken careful consideration in ensuring that the theme of our diverse school community is prevalent across our curriculum, to ensure our pupils leave us with an understanding of what it means to be living in Britain today. Pupil questionnaires are also in place to ensure that our curriculum is bespoke for the needs of our children. Our PSHE (RSE) curriculum enables children to develop a wide range of views, beliefs and tolerance of others. We have weekly timetabled lessons, and opportunities for discussion are built into the school day to enhance understanding. British
Values underpin a great deal of our school life with weekly 'All Stars' assemblies for children who demonstrate our school values of 'Reach High, Be Kind and Caring, Be Determined, Be Proud, Be Independent'.
Policy for PSHE and Citizenship
Through our whole school approach of using the Zones of Regulation, we give our children the time and space to explore, discuss and manage their emotions. Our aim is to create an emotionally literate school where children can explore, express and develop themselves into young people who know themselves and are ready to venture into a world beyond our school. We also have a trained ELSA in our school to support children who may be struggling with areas of their mental health at home or in school. She is available for all children to access following a referral from a member of staff.
We gained our new style Healthy School Award from the Leicestershire Healthy Schools team last year. This focused on our successes in six areas of the healthy school curriculum - Physical health, Emotional health and Wellbeing, Drug Education, Food in Schools and PSHE and RSE, showing that we demonstrate best practice and have a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of the school community. To support us in achieving this, we have also worked hard to gain the Food for Life Gold Award which we are very proud of! Children and staff made many changes to demonstrate that our school is doing fantastic work to provide healthy school meals, great lunchtimes and food education that has a positive impact on both pupils and the wider community.
